There are a lot of fitness classes in St Albans. An awful lot. Not just the usual gym and yoga combination, but aerial arts, reformer pilates, nano training, Zumba, running clubs, bounce fitness and more. Whether you're a complete beginner or someone getting back into it after a long break (no judgement), here's our honest guide to the best fitness classes in St Albans.
One thing worth saying upfront: the best fitness class is the one you'll actually go to. So rather than telling you what's most effective, we've tried to describe what each class is actually like – the atmosphere, the difficulty level, who it's for. That way you can make your own call.
Core Strength & Flexibility
Pilates
Pilates has exploded in popularity for good reason – it works, it's low-impact, and it's genuinely accessible to people of all fitness levels. St Albans has good options across the spectrum.
Reformer Pilates at WOW Pilates with Lorraine Paul is at the premium end – private 1:1 sessions on the full reformer setup (reformer, Cadillac, chair, barrels). If you want to get serious about Pilates, start here. Lorraine has been teaching for over 8 years and her studio is beautifully set up. The 1:1 format means sessions are bespoke to you – brilliant if you're returning from injury or have specific goals. We tried it and came away genuinely impressed.
Alternatively, you could try group matwork Pilates classes, there are several options running throughout the week in St Albans. Tatiana runs a range of different classes which would be a good starting point if you've never tried Pilates before – lower cost than 1:1 and a good way to learn the basics before progressing. We've reviewed both matwork and Reformer on the blog if you want more detail before committing.
Yoga
Clarity Yoga Shala is a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of St Albans. It's beautifully calm, properly taught, and genuinely welcoming to complete beginners. The timetable covers multiple styles – if you're not sure where to start, founder Melanie is happy to advise. We went as a total beginner and came away feeling like we'd found something we'd been missing. Beyond yoga's well-documented physical benefits (flexibility, strength, balance), what surprised us was the mental reset. An hour at Clarity Yoga Shala sets you up for the whole weekend. Highly recommended. If you want something a little bit different Feel Hot Yoga also has a full programme of yoga and instructors and by doing it in a hot environment you will feel like you've done more of a workout.
Dance & Movement
Dance Classes for Adults
Dance Dimension runs adult dance classes in St Albans across a range of styles. The great thing about dance as a fitness class is that it doesn't feel like exercise while you're doing it – you're too busy concentrating on the steps and having a good time. By the end of an hour you'll have worked harder than you expected, met some people, and left in a better mood than when you arrived. From £8.50 and suitable for all levels.
Zumba
Zumba with Crishi is exactly what it says – high-energy Latin-inspired dance fitness that is enormous fun and a proper workout. If you've never tried Zumba, it's one of those classes where the time flies by. Don't worry if you can't keep up perfectly at first – nobody can, and nobody cares. It's the effort that counts, and Crishi creates an atmosphere where that's entirely fine.
Bounce Fitness
Bounce takes rebounding (mini-trampoline fitness) and turns it into a full group fitness class. It's low-impact on the joints, high-impact on your cardiovascular system, and – if we're honest – a bit ridiculous and a lot of fun. Good for anyone who finds conventional cardio classes a bit grim.
Running
Couch to 5K
Athena Running runs the 0 to 5K programme for complete beginners – a structured, coached progression from not running at all to completing a 5K. It's welcoming, it's supportive, and it works. If you've always thought running wasn't for you, give this a go before you write it off. The sessions run regularly throughout the year.
Social Running
Miles and Mates is a men's social running club built around the idea that running is better with company. Low pressure, all abilities, and free. If you've been running alone and finding it a bit joyless, this is a simple fix.
Strength & Conditioning

Gymtro – Nano Training
Gymtro has created something genuinely different in St Albans. Rather than a standard gym, they offer nano training – personal training programmes delivered to groups of 5 or fewer. The environment is smaller, more intimate and considerably less intimidating than a conventional gym. If the gym has always felt alien – the machines, the atmosphere, the clientele – Gymtro is worth trying.
We reviewed Gymtro as part of our 'Getting Fit At Fifty' series, and the verdict was unambiguously positive. The coaching is excellent, the small group format keeps you accountable, and the results are real. Good for beginners and experienced gym-goers alike.
Martial Arts & Combat Sports
Martial arts are one of the most underrated fitness options in St Albans. They build strength, improve cardiovascular fitness, sharpen reflexes and focus – and they're genuinely good for mental health too. St Albans has several excellent options.
Queen Bee Boxing
Queen Bee Boxing offers women-only boxing classes in a welcoming, friendly environment, with the occasional visit from World Heavyweight Champions. Don't be put off if you've never been near a boxing gym before – these classes are about fitness, technique and confidence. Boxing is one of the most effective full-body workouts there is, and Queen Bee make it approachable for complete beginners.
Combat Gym
Combat Gym offers a range of martial arts and combat sports classes in St Albans. Whether you want to learn a martial art properly, improve your fitness or just try something genuinely different, Combat Gym is worth a look. The variety of disciplines on offer means there's likely something that fits whatever you're after.
Fensoms Gym
Fensoms Gym is all about Muay Thai (Kick Boxing), and they do it very well. With a strong programme of classes for all levels along with women-only classes and kids classes too. A solid choice if you want proper kick boxing training in a structured, experienced environment.
Something A Bit Different
Trapeze & Aerial Arts
St Albans Trapeze & Aerial Arts might not be the first thing you think of when looking for a fitness class, but it absolutely counts. Aerial arts build extraordinary upper body and core strength, improve coordination and balance, and – crucially – give you something to work towards that isn't just 'lose weight' or 'run faster'. The sense of progression as you nail new moves is genuinely motivating. Classes run for complete beginners although the way up to well circus level!
Fencing
Fencing is another one that surprises people. It's a full body workout – explosive leg movements, constant footwork, and a level of mental concentration that makes an hour pass very quickly. Available at various venues in and around St Albans. Check out the Get Physical section of the site for current options.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi is a little different from everything else on this list – slower, more meditative, focused on breath and movement rather than exertion. But it builds real physical fitness over time: balance, flexibility, coordination and core strength. And it's completely free on Saturdays in St Albans. If you've been meaning to try it, there really is no barrier.
Quick Guide: Which Class Is Right For You?
Complete beginner, not sure where to start: Try a beginner Pilates class or Zumba – both are welcoming, well-taught and low-pressure.
Getting back into fitness after a break: Reformer Pilates (1:1 at WOW Pilates) or yoga at Clarity. Both are structured, progressive and easy to modify if you have any physical limitations.
Want something social: Dance Dimension, Zumba or Miles and Mates. You'll meet people, and that makes a difference to whether you keep going.
Want to get genuinely strong: Gymtro. The small group personal training format is the most effective way to build strength if you're not already an experienced gym user.
Looking for something a bit different: Trapeze & Aerial Arts, fencing, or one of the martial arts options. All of them will surprise you.
On a budget: Miles and Mates runs are free. Tai Chi on Saturdays is free. Dance and Zumba classes start from around £8.
Want to learn a martial art: Queen Bee Boxing, Combat Gym or Fensoms Gym – three good options depending on what discipline appeals.
