Who We Are

We run two different workshops, the Bread Craft Workshop and the Sour Dough Workshop. Bread Craft Workshop - Learn artisanal breadmaking skills in one day. On this informative and creative course, you will be shown how to handmake a range of traditional breads including a basic sourdough. Breads made could include a sourdough boule, malthouse sandwich loaf, french baguettes, wholemeal tin loaves, olive oil pizza dough, foccacia, sweetened doughs such as Chelsea buns. You will each make and take home at least 5 different bread products. Sour Dough Workshop - By using just flour and water we teach you how to create a wild yeast rye starter and then guide you to make a variety of different sour dough breads using age old artisan skills Price includes a take home bag that includes at least 4 different breads made by you, a rye sourdough starter and recipe booklet so you are set up to make everything again at home.

Who is it for?

As well as baking delicious bread we are very keen to share our skills. We run highly acclaimed informative workshops where you can learn to bake a range of artisan breads. Our classes are informal and fun and very hands on. We have been teaching people to cook for over 20 years. £90 to include all ingredients, take home bag, light lunch, refreshments and a recipe booklet. Courses are held in our domestic cookery school kitchen in Harpenden and usually run from 10.00am - 2.30pm

Need to Know

We are Jane Todd and Sarah Cripps. We are sisters who both trained as home economists, gaining degrees from University of London and Leeds University . We have had busy, successful careers in the food industry and in the NHS - teaching cookery, nutrition and healthy eating within school and NHS settings, and developing food products for national companies. In 1999 we established our cookery school, 'Pattacakes' and we were at the forefront of identifying the lack of cooking skills in children. A need that was later picked up by the UK's media and celebrity chefs. Our social enterprise - The Kitchen Front CIC- was established in 2016 to teach older people, disabled groups, and those on a low budget. We were fortunate in being chosen to participate in the Lloyds Bank Social Entrepreneurs programme and were able to develop our community activities with the help of this scheme. As The Kitchen Front we have been teaching members of the community who wish to benefit from our straightforward simple teaching style that brings cookery to everyone whatever their previous knowledge or skills. Since the beginning of 2020 we have been very excited to bring you our newest venture - The Kitchen Front Bakery -a microbakery and grocery store selling delicious sourdough and yeasted breads and other goods created by us in our certified home kitchens. As an endorsement of our skills we have qualified as 'Bread Angels' - Bread Angels are part of the Virtuous Bread Network and are trained bakers who are dedicated to bringing real bread to the community ( as identified by the Real Bread Campaign). As part of our belief that everyone should be able to cook and create dishes that can be shared and enjoyed by many, we also run specialist workshops in artisan breadmaking skills and other areas of cookery that celebrate traditional cooking skills.
